Join Lanka’s three-day Japanese calligraphy workshop and immerse yourself in the beauty and mindfulness of Japanese calligraphy.
During this special three- day course, you will experience the art of Shodō- the traditional Japanese way of writing and discover how brush, ink, and paper come together to create expressive works of art.
Day 1: The Foundation of Japanese Calligraphy
You will learn the basic knowledge and 8 basic
strokes of Japanese calligraphy. At the end of the day, you will write the
character 永 Ei(eternity), a
special kanji character that beautifully contains all eight basic strokes with
your name in Japanese(katakana).
Day 2: Writing Summer Seasonal Term
We explore kisetsu no kotoba(seasonal term). You will practice elegant two-kanji summer
expressions such as 大暑 (peak of the heat
in the summer), learning balance, rhythm, and composition.
Day 3: Writing Summer Seasonal Haiku in block
style
You will learn Haiku, how beautifully the Japanese
poet Basho Matsuo expressed the scenery that he saw on his trip. You practice
writing his Haiku in a combination of kanji and hiragana. At the end of this workshop, you can draw your
favorite characters from either lesson on either shikishi(色紙), tanzaku(短冊),
uchiwa(団扇), or sensu(扇子) if you like. * extra cost.
Let’s slow down, focus, and create something meaningful this summer.

Through the movement of the brush and ink, I express my connection to Japanese aesthetics and the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi -finding beauty in imperfection, transience, and simplicity.
